Frequently Asked Questions About Our Postnatal Pilates Course

We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you understand our services.

When can I start postnatal Pilates after giving birth?

Most mums can start gentle postnatal Pilates about 6 weeks post birth, once cleared by their doctor or midwife. Early sessions focus on breathing, pelvic floor control, and gentle core activation, helping your body recover safely before progressing to full-strength exercises.

What are the benefits of postnatal Pilates for recovery and core strength?

Postnatal Pilates helps strengthen your core and pelvic floor. It improves posture and stability, and can reduce back and shoulder pain. It supports abdominal muscle repair (diastasis recti), enhances circulation, and gently restores overall energy.

How does postnatal Pilates help with pelvic floor and abdominal separation (diastasis recti)?

Postnatal Pilates focuses on deep core activation and controlled breathing, which strengthen the transverse abdominis and pelvic floor muscles. These gentle movements help reconnect and close abdominal separation (diastasis recti), improving core stability, posture, and bladder control while reducing pain and tension in the lower back.

Can I bring my baby to a post-natal Pilates class?

Yes — our postnatal or “Mums & Bubs” Pilates classes are designed so you can bring your baby along. Creche is run adjacent to the Reformer room, creating a relaxed, baby-friendly environment.

How is postnatal Pilates different from regular Pilates?

Post-natal Pilates is tailored specifically for new mums. It focuses on core rehabilitation, pelvic floor strength, posture, and gentle movement, Regular Pilates builds overall strength and tone, while post-natal Pilates prioritises healing, stability, and safe progression for postpartum bodies.

What should I wear and bring to a postnatal Pilates class?

Wear comfortable activewear that supports easy movement. Bring a water bottle, towel, and any essentials for your baby like a blanket or toys.

Do I need medical clearance before starting post-natal Pilates?

Yes — it’s important to get medical clearance from your doctor or women’s health physiotherapist before starting postnatal Pilates. They can check your abdominal separation, pelvic floor, and incision healing if you had a C-section. Once cleared, you can begin gentle exercises safely and progress at your own pace under professional guidance.
